What’s with the acronyms? Why of course it’s the Association of Performing Arts Presenters Emerging Leader Institute. APAP is the annual swarm of presenters, artists, booking agents, and arts leaders in NYC, all talking about the state of the presenting business, as well as the bizarre ritual of watching hundreds of musical acts in sterile hotel conference rooms shop their wares—truly soul crushing. (The good stuff to see, music, dance, and theater, as one could imagine, is off-site, far from the florescent lights of the Hilton midtown.) This year, I applied, and got accepted into the Emerging Leader Institute encased within APAP, where, aside from gradually emerging, I’ll be with a cohort of folk in the performing arts, marketing, museum worlds for a few days of mentoring and (sniff) knowledge-sharing in early January.
